Bet on Super Bowl XLII
January 30, 2008

As Super Bowl XLII draws closer and closer, the plot
lines seem fully developed. The New England Patriots, modern
football’s juggernaut and the team looking to become the
first to go undefeated with a 19-0 record, is expected to
beat the New York Giants, a team that didn’t even win its
own division, but showed character with three road victories
to reach the Super Bowl. Furthermore, the Patriots topped
the Giants 38-35 in the regular season finale just a month
ago. But much has changed since then. New England’s star
quarterback, Tom Brady, injured his ankle in the team’s AFC
Championship game and missed several days of practice. And
since the practice sessions are closed to the media, no one
has seen if he is fully fit. Meanwhile the Giants marched
through the playoffs with wins at Jacksonville, Dallas and
Green Bay, as quarterback Eli Manning and his crew have
gained experience and, more importantly, confidence.
The odds makers have installed the Pats as 11.5-point
favorites. Conventional wisdom would say that in the warm
weather of Tempe, Arizona, the prolific passing tandem of
Brady to Randy Moss should be unstoppable and the team that
set all kinds of records this season as the best offensive
force in NFL history can pile on the points en route to a
big win. But the naysayers have many points to make as well.
The Giants lost to the Patriots by a mere 3 points last
month and seem to be a better team now. And with Brady
hurting, how effective will the New England attack be
against New York’s explosive pass rush anyway?
Perhaps the only story overriding Brady’s ankle is how
Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is dealing with it. The
three-time Super Bowl winning coach is notorious for mind
games that can keep the opponent and the media guessing
while he prepares his team. It’s not unthinkable that not
only is Brady 100%, but he always has been and this story
has been a nonstory from the beginning. Similarly, Brady
could be hurt badly and in doubt for the game, but the
Patriots wouldn’t let that info slip either. Accordingly,
the Giants and their head coach, Tom Coughlin, must be ready
for anything.
Feel like you know which way this game is going? Head to
Bodog Sports and try your luck. The initial points
spread on the game was two touchdowns, but it has dropped in
recent days, in part due to Brady’s ankle. You can take your
chance at winning big alongside one of Sunday’s combatants.
Is coach Belichick playing another game with his opponents
and the press? Will we see Brady and the rest of the team at
full strength ready to run over the Giants? Are the Giants
really that much better than they were a month ago? Is what
they learned from the Week 17 game, combined with their
newfound confidence, enough to spoil the Patriots’ date with
history?
