Texas Hold’em rules

texas holdemTexas Hold’em is arguably the most famous poker variant today, and in large poker events such as World Series of Poker, European Poker Tour and Aussie Millions the main event is typically a No Limit Texas Hold’em event.

Basic information about Texas Hold’em

  • Texas Hold’em is played with a standard (French) 52 card deck. No jokers or other wild cards are used.
  • Texas Hold’em is usually played as No Limit or Fixed Limit. Pot Limit Texas Hold’em is much more unusual.
  • Texas Hold’em is a poker game with community cards.
  • Each player get two individual cards (the hole cards) at the start of a round. You should look at your hole cards, but not show them to any of the other players.
  • There are five community cards in Texas Hold’em. They are dealt 3 + 1 + 1. The initial three community cards are called the flop. The fourth community card is called turn and the fifth community card is called the river.

Start of the game

  1. At the start of the game, the player seated left of the dealer button posts the small blind and the player seated left of the small blind posts the big blind. This is two mandatory wagers used to get the pot going. The practice of having a small blind and a big blind is found in many different poker variants, not just Texas Hold’em.
  2. Each player will receive their two hole cards.
  3. The first betting round takes place, starting with the player seated left of the big blind. He or she will fold or make a new wager. The betting round will then continue with the next player to the left, and so on, until the betting round is finnished.

  1. After the initial betting round, the dealer will place three open community cards on the table. This is the flop.
  2. A betting round will follow. The player seated left of the dealer button is the first to act.

The turn

  1. The dealer will now place the fourth open community card on the table. This card is the turn.
  2. A betting round will follow. The player seated left of the dealer button is the first to act.

The river

  1. The dealer will place the fifth open community card on the table. This card is the river. Each player left in the round will now know what their final poker hand is.
  2. A final betting round takes place.

Showdown

  1. When the final betting round is over, the remaining players will show their hole cards to determine which player has the best poker hand. The player with the highest poker hand wins the pot. If two or more poker hands are of equal value, the pot is shared among those hands.

When you form your poker hand in Texas Hold’em, you are free to use or not use the communal cards as you please. This distinguishes Texas Hold’em from Omaha.
